Fishing with Glen Dene Adventure
Lake Hawea & Wanaka is the ideal spot to spend a few days fresh
water fishing. Fish stocks include brown and rainbow trout, and landlocked
Chinook salmon. Local Fisheries cater equally for the serious fly fisher,
the boat angler or the backcountry fisher. Our guides are available
with vehicle support and we also have helicopter and several boats available.
High mountains border these large lakes, with a number of tributaries
providing some magical scenery, water runs from the glacier and high
mountain springs down through beech forest to the open pastoral land
before entering the lakes offering a wonderful range of fishing environments.
Lake Hawea is our view unbroken from development 60 kilometres up the
Lake and in to the Hunter Valley. Lake Hawea is 35 kilometres long and
is 392 meters deep; it has two main rivers feeding the lake, The Hunter
and the Dingle both famous backcountry fishery.
Fishing the High Country Rivers & streams:
Starts in November where the trout are often eager to please as aquatic
food is often scare in early spring as the wait for the rich insect
life that arrives in summer.
Summer brings rising fish, to delicacy like grasshopper, cicadas, and
brown beetles. The dry fly, nymphs and wet fly fishing can all be successful
in these High Country streams.
The water is often crystal clear; stalking the fish with help from your
spotter requires patience and skill, with the use of Polaroid glasses
this will make a rainbow easier to see as the water swirls from pool
to pool.
With the cool fresh water, the noise of nature and water tumbling boulders
you feel powerfully drawn each year to these High Country streams, the
lure to catch one of these Mountain fish is a challenge and makes for
